Carlanna L. Hendrick was born in Bristol, VA, April 15, 1937. She received her B.A. from Agnes Scott College in 1958, an M.A. from the Univ. of Tennessee, and a Ph.D. (History) from the University of South Carolina in 1966. She has taught History at Maryville College (1959-62), Columbia College (1965-70), Francis Marion College (1971-88) and was a lecturer at Coker College (1988). In 1988, she joined the faculty of the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics where she has taught a variety of history courses and serves as chair of the Humanities Department. As of 2006, she continues to teach at the Governor’s School in Hartsville. She has published in many different historical journals and continues to be an active scholar. Her professional historical activities include serving as President of the South Carolina Historical Association (1979-80) and a member of the National Archives Advisory Council (1976-78). She has served on many community and state level boards, commissions, and committees but is recognized here primarily for her service on the South Carolina State Library Board, where she served as member from 1971 to 1984, and as Chair of the Board from 1973-1984. Her political activities with the Democratic Party have been extensive, serving as precinct officer, county and state delegate, county vice-chair, treasurer, state chair of the SC Democratic Women, and district coordinator for state and national political campaigns. She received the Order of the Palmetto in 1986.
